Car Batteries vs. Winter

It's a rainy, overcast morning. You're rushing to get the kids in the car because you're running slightly behind for drop-off again.

You get everyone loaded, lock the front door and run out to the car as it starts to rain. Hop in, give yourself a small smile and sigh for making this morning happen then get a tense, tight feeling in your chest when you flick the key and your motor does not turn over.

Let's face it, there's never a good time to have a flat battery, it usually happens when you least expect it.

So what can you do to avoid it? Here's a list from our Service Manager Adam

  • Get your car serviced regularly! As part of our 65-Point Comprehensive Vehicle check we test your battery and show you the reading. Batteries need replacing roughly every 2-3 years, staying on top of their charge will help you avoid unplanned flat batteries

  • If your car isn't starting you can try a bump start. This method only works for manual cars (often older models), if you can get a hand pushing the car and have it in gear the engine may turn over enough to ignite the battery. This method does not work for Automatic cars.

Battery technology has changed a lot in recent times, you can now invest more and purchase a Lithium battery which will set you back around $1,000 but will last you 10 years, alternatively the Lead-Acid Cell Batteries (the regular type) will set you back between $200-$300 and last 2-3 years.

If you can't remember the last time you had your battery checked give us a call and bring it in so we can test it for you.
